El libre albedrío no es sólo una sensación mental de elección sin límites. No es únicamente un término coloquial en el discurso ordinario. El libre albedrío es un hecho de la naturaleza con base científica, una realidad psicológica y una realidad biológica. En mi opinión, el libre albedrío apareció en la evolución porque ofrece a todas las especies inteligentes una enorme ventaja en la lucha por la supervivencia y el éxito reproductivo. Los humanos pertenecen a una especie en la que cada uno de sus miembros compite con otros para emparejarse. Además, a lo largo de la evolución los sujetos de la especie luchan por la vida misma atacando o defendiéndose de otros depredadores inteligentes. El mundo animal está repleto de fanfarronadas y de expresiones gestuales vacías, y se caracteriza por desarrollar estrategias que permitan que el comportamiento propio sea impredecible. La dirección hacia la que se lanzará una ardilla cuando un halcón baje en picado sobre ella resulta ser estadísticamente impredecible; si fuera predecible, ya no quedarían ardillas. La aleatoriedad y las fanfarronadas no son lo únicos mecanismos por los que la evolución garantiza que unos depredadores no puedan predecir el comportamiento de otros. Si mi conducta fuera totalmente predecible para otro ser humano que compitiera por la misma pareja, esa persona siempre iría un paso por delante de mí y me vencería con facilidad. Si un depredador inteligente u otro ser humano que deseara robar mis recursos predijeran por completo mi comportamiento, me encontraría abocado a las fauces de la muerte. Por este motivo es esencial que gran parte de nuestras acciones sean impredecibles para los depredadores, para los miembros de nuestra misma especie e incluso para nosotros mismos, puesto que si supiéramos con total precisión cual sería nuestro comportamiento, la evolución seleccionaría también formas que lo hicieran perceptible para nuestros competidores.
